consider this question: what makes people on TV so much better than people in real life? could it be that award-winning witty, yet sarcastic dialogue with just the right touch of humor? or the way they walk into your living room when you want to see them and leave when you don't want to see them without you having to make a phone call or awkward excuse? or is it their tride and true dependability--the fact that they deliver without fail day after day when the people of this world are busy being busy? or maybe the fact that they ARE who they say they are, they don't throw any unscripted curve balls--you get what you see. what else could explain the fact that people tune in week after week and cancel real plans with real people to spend quality time with their TV sets. and i can't count the amount of times i've fallen in love with a highly developed, intellectual and damn sexy TV character--not on two hands. yet i can't count the times i've been in love with a real person on one hand--not even on one finger. and my friends are great but, let's be honest, these friends are so much cooler. how many times do we watch a show and say to ourselves, "i'd totally be friends with her/him." and they hang out in groups--the same groups! isn't that sort of thing obsolete? oh and is there ever a dull moment? as i sit in my room, by myself, listening to a siouxie and the banshees cover of "dear prudence" (although, an amazing cover), these friends are off in TV land making lasting memories. and tomorrow when i tell my friends all about the awesome things they did on last nights episode, i remember that i was sitting the couch by myself last night--watching a TV show and not out making my own lasting memories.
